Relationships are difficult to maintain. A community thrives on the relationships within it. It's a shame that so many people disengage from the relationship aspects within the communities they are a part of as a result of others being unwilling to support, and encourage those relationships with the respect that they deserve.

As someone who has a tendency to tackle things in life with a "go hard, or go home" attitude, I have nothing but the highest respect for Brian, and many others, within the reptile community who show that same courage, dedication, and generosity of themselves. I can't imagine herpetoculture without Brian, or SnakebytesTV. Without +Jason W connecting with me, and finding SnakebytesTV through his channel on YouTube, I might have given up after Peekaboo died. I certainly would have remained one of those isolated hobbyists, completely disconnected from any idea of a larger community. Given how many people I interact with now as a result of reptiles, that would have been a real shame to miss out on.

I have to confess that one of the high points of this year was when Brian responded to a tweet, wishing me luck speaking at my first ever herpetology conference, and even though I had a personal issue come up that prevented that from happening, the encouragement he passed on to me persists. Getting a show of support seems so simple, but its something that means more to me right now than I can explain. The fact that he's a big shot in the reptile community was neat, but even if he was someone no one else knew, it would still be as meaningful.

It's so easy to encourage others. It doesn't cost anything, it doesn't take a whole lot of time, and it requires so little of a person. It doesn't take anything special - just sharing a link, or sending a kind word on occasion.

I take on a whole lot of issues, and I can get pretty tenacious when picking apart destructive influences. I have a "scorched earth" policy with a lot of "isms", behaviors, and concepts, so I guess I can understand folks getting dug in to their positions on husbandry issues, etc. It just seems harsh to me that someone who has proven himself to be a positive influence within the community, who has dedicated so very much to herpetoculture, and who clearly has such a love for what he does is being subjected to this kind of public flogging.

As someone who calls out a whole lot of bullshit, and has no mercy for dishonesty, I do agree that there are not "untouchables", nor has shoving issues under the carpet ever been wise. I definitely would never advocate for silent conformity, especially when we all know that the lives, and well-being of our animals ride on us, as well as the future of herpetoculture.

What I will argue for though is giving respect where it has been earned, and being gentle with those we've established relationships with. It does us no good, and does not advance our causes, to become abusive to those who are standing beside us. Brian has clearly demonstrated his commitment, earned his honor, and truly is a decent person to his core. That needs to count for something from the rest of us. When someone has proven themselves to us, we owe them more of ourselves, better of ourselves, in return.
